Best-Laid Plans…

Dear Blog Readers,

Some time ago I wrote about the dangers of multi-tasking and proudly declared that “couple-tasking” would be my route, instead (yes, I made that up). Two things at once, I said. That will allow me to keep a handle on things. As evidenced by the obvious neglect of this blog, “couple-tasking” did not work so well. Not that I didn’t work on the items I planned to work on, it’s just that I forgot that some tasks are never completed. Re-writing, editing, spit-shining a novel – that never ends. I should know this. I’ve been re-writing one book since 2003.

I apologize profusely and thank you for not cutting me loose. This isn’t just a writing lesson, this is a life lesson.

I offer this advice to those of you who are closet control freaks like me: Don’t get stuck in a rut! It’s been a long time since my last post. Sometimes it’s good to put your head down and keep working, whether you see results or not. But sometimes you’re working your way deeper into a ditch. It can be hard to tell which one you’re in, but it’s worth the effort to stop and take measure before you lose too much time. Plans are just that – a blueprint to take you where you need to go. If you haven’t gotten there in a decent amount of time you really need to scrap those plans and start over!

Best,

Ava

I like the term couple-tasking, though it would take an extra effort to follow. I’m so used to multitasking that I don’t know how to simply complete just two tasks.
